Africa Day: Reimagining Solidarity, Power, and Partnership

May 28, 2026

On Africa Day, we honour a continent defined not only by its diversity and resilience, but by its deep traditions of solidarity, community knowledge, and collective imagination. It is a moment that invites both celebration and reflection—on how Africa is seen, how it is engaged, and how its futures are shaped.

At the Philanthropy Reform Alliance (PRA), Africa Day is more than a symbolic commemoration. It is a reminder that Africa has never been short of solutions; rather, it has often been constrained by systems of aid and development that undervalue local knowledge, reinforce external decision-making, and reproduce dependency.

We believe that the future of development and philanthropy must begin with a fundamental shift: from extractive and externally driven models toward locally led, relational, and solidarity-based approaches. This means rethinking not only where resources flow, but how decisions are made, whose knowledge counts, and what forms of partnership are considered legitimate.

Through our Collaborative Unlearning Labs, PRA is working with practitioners, funders, and community actors to surface and challenge the assumptions that sustain unequal systems. We are creating spaces to reflect on power, question inherited practices, and reimagine partnerships rooted in trust, mutuality, and shared accountability.

Africa Day, therefore, becomes an invitation to unlearn what no longer serves, to elevate what already exists within communities, and to build systems that recognise Africa not as a recipient of development, but as a generator of knowledge, innovation, and leadership.

As we celebrate this day, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing a philanthropic and development ecosystem that reflects Africa’s dignity, diversity, and agency. One that is not defined by dependency, but by solidarity; not by extraction, but by partnership; and not by imposed solutions, but by locally led transformation.

Happy Africa Day.
